Katherine Newman and Almelo Continue Winning Streak at Upperville Colt and Horse Show

RELEASE: June 11, 2008
AUTHOR/ADMINISTRATOR: By Jenny Ross

Last week at the Upperville Colt and Horse Show in Upperville, VA, Katherine Newman continued her winning ways with Almelo in the Paul & Eve Go As You Please Handy Hunter class. Two weeks prior, the pair scored a major win at the Devon Horse Show in the $10,000 ASG Software USHJA International Hunter Derby in Devon, PA. Seventeen-year-old Newman piloted Almelo for Mimi Abel-Smith, who shows the horse in the older amateur-owner hunters. Abel-Smith resides in Middleburg, VA.

"We had to make up our own handy hunter course," said Newman. "It was a lot of fun. Almelo was fantastic, and we won with a score of 87."

Newman grew up in the Upperville area and relocated to Wellington, FL, two years ago. She trains with her parents, Kathy and Gerry, and lives at her family's farm, Allwyn Court.

The young rider also showed Paris Sellon's horse Cool Blue in the small junior 16-17 hunters. "It was my first show with Cool Blue, and he had scores of 86 and 88 over fences," smiled Newman. "He was also fourth in the hack, and we won the reserve championship."

Allwyn Court's Chellapo Z earned another blue ribbon with Todd Minikus of Loxahatchee, FL. The duo was double clear and won the seven-/eight-year-old jumper class on Friday, June 6. Corvet Z and Castleton, who were horses trained and sold by Allwyn Court, received top ribbons as well. Corvet Z, owned by Manhattan Mortgage and ridden by Samantha Schaefer, took champion in the small junior 15 and under hunter division. Castleton, owned and ridden by Zack Parks, won the top tricolor in the amateur-owner 18-35 hunters.

Katherine Newman and the horses at Allwyn Court will compete next in Lexington, KY, at the Country Heir Horse Shows.
